The Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure (MESPI), in partnership with the Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo (IWRM-K), a program co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Kosovo, today organized the central event for World Environment Day 2025.

This year's global theme, "Ending Plastic Pollution," was conveyed in Kosovo with a clear message: "For Plastic-Free Waters."

“Plastic has become one of the biggest environmental and health hazards today. The figures are alarming: every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in our rivers and seas, damaging biodiversity, food chains, and the health of our communities. The Swiss Cooperation Office has been and will always be an unwavering partner of Kosovo's institutions and citizens, supporting efforts for sustainable governance and sustainable development," stated Shkëlqim Daci, representative from the Swiss Cooperation Office in Kosovo.

“The Government of Kosovo has invested around 2 million euros for river clean-up, and for the future, we are considering having a more unique management system in the Integrated Waste Management Strategy. Currently, we have one waste separation center, but we plan to have 5 separation centers in 5 regions in the strategy,” said Agim Mazreku, External Political Advisor at MESPI.

The spirit of the message "For Plastic-Free Waters" was reflected throughout the event, culminating in a comprehensive panel discussion that brought together institutional representatives, environmental experts, academics, civil society organizations, and youth, who highlighted the challenges related to plastic pollution in Kosovo and shared concrete examples, research, and practical ideas for long-term solutions. During the thematic discussion, it was emphasized that plastic pollution is already a global crisis – and Kosovo is no exception. Microplastics have been found everywhere in aquatic ecosystems, even in the human body, according to recent international studies.

MESPI donated 100 trees to Tech Park Prishtina, as part of the commitment to a greener and more sustainable environment. This symbolic activity aims to raise awareness of the importance of urban greening and community involvement in nature protection, making the city healthier for current and future generations.

The event concluded with the symbolic planting of trees and a creative exhibition made from recycled materials by students of the Finnish School.
